Art Deco Dublin is delighted to announce a significant Art Deco heritage achievement close to the heart of our city — just beyond Ranelagh at Vergemount Park, home to a fully intact Art Deco street built in the 1930s by architect and engineer J.P. McGrath A.M.Inst C.E.I, a prominent figure in Dublin's architectural and engineering landscape of the era.
Last year one of the street's homeowners, together with their architect, applied for planning permission for a residential extension. Unaware of the street's considerable heritage value, the proposed plans included alterations to the front elevation that risked compromising both the character of the property and the integrity of this remarkable streetscape. We assisted in lodging a formal objection, and subsequently an appeal — and we are pleased to report that, as a result, the homeowner and their architect agreed to revert to the original front elevation, safeguarding this irreplaceable piece of Dublin's architectural history.
The street was recently featured on a Nationwide RTÉ programme on Art Deco in Dublin , which included stunning aerial footage showcasing its unique character close to the heart of the city set against the beautiful backdrop of Dublin Bay — a reminder of just how precious this hidden gem is to our city.
